Western colonial systems in the United States have suppressed many our Indigenous cultures and voices, including 2-Spirit individuals.
As a result of these historical implications, major setbacks to the two-spirit (2SP) and LGBT+ communities have been accelerated by state-to-state legislation, heavily influenced by religious and political values. In Arizona, there are several bills in place such as:
These types of regulations will significantly impact the future health of LGBT+ individuals living in Arizona.

This research study will acknowledge both risk and resilience amongst Indigenous LGBT+ (2SPLGBT+) groups by identifying the health inequities they may face in a healthcare setting and between patient-provider engagements. This study will help me gain a better understanding of the health status within our 2SPLGBT+ community and support trust amongst tribal groups in research.
This study aligns with my long term goals in reaching tribal communities that have not yet been acknowledged or supported in health-science research.
This study will recruit 50 2SPLGBT+ participants and will be conducted with focus groups on ASU campus in Downtown Phoenix or participants may choose a 1:1 zoom interview. Study will be one hour. Compensation of a $25 Amazon gift card will be emailed to participants.
Outcomes of this study will contribute to Indigenous health research in health and scientific areas. There is a need for more sufficient research that represents our Indigenous communities in a way that is resilient for our cultural and personal legacy.

2-Spirit individuals have been with us for hundreds of years, providing our community with safety by protecting our youth and elders. They have taught us many ways of life and skills that can apply to our spiritual well being, kinship and personal well-being. Acceptance, healing and resilience are elements of our Indigenous legacy and I am hoping to contribute these elements within my work towards helping our Indigenous communities be acknowledged in research.
Thank you (Ahéheé / Askwalí) for your time and I hope together we can help one another support ALL of our relations.

I have been an ally for my LGBT+ family, friends and colleagues for over 18 years. I stand for LGBT+ rights, justices and equity in all areas of life.
Yá'át'ééh to all my relations. I am Diné, Hopi and Omaha from Flagstaff, Arizona. Currently, I am a PhD student at ASU Edson Nursing and Health Innovation in Phoenix, AZ. I am studying Indigenous resilience and health equity in health-science research. I have a Masters in Health Informatics from ASU College of Health Solutions and a Bachelors in Community Health from ASU Edson College of Nursing and Health Innovation.
This is my first research study in the field, and my role in this study is the Principle Investigator (PI). Being a first year PhD student, I am starting my dissertation process with this project. I am beginning with 2-Spirit communities in regard to the critical need to acknowledge health for 2-Spirit communities in health research.
With this study, my goal is to support and represent appropriate opportunities for 2-Spirit individuals within health research, furthering towards health equity within legislation.
Funding for this study was from an ASU SEED grant. This study has been approved by ASU Institutional Review Board for 2022-2023. Copyright © 2023 In Our Voices: 2-SpiritLGBT+ Equity in Health - All Rights Reserved.
